Bergen Community College student Manaal Muddassir is studying computer science with the goal to work in cybersecurity.
Muddassir, of Hackensack, chose Bergen because of its affordability. “I chose Bergen because it was the only feasible option,” she said. She found a path to academic success with Bergen’s affordable in-county tuition rate.
Muddassir is making an impact in the leadership roles she has stepped into. She is a member of the Diversity Committee in the Student Government Association (SGA). “Participating in this committee has deepened my understanding of cultural advocacy and broadened my perspective on heritage and identity,” she said.
“Recruitment has taught me the value of clear communication and proactive engagement, as our role is pivotal in fostering a welcoming and informed PTK community,” said Muddassir who serves as the director of recruitment in Bergen’s Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society.
Through her role on the SGA Diversity Committee, Muddassir organized a soccer tournament in collaboration with the Muslim Student Association (MSA), which she is the president of. “I’ve learned to lead with empathy and purpose, balancing the needs of our diverse membership with the mission of MSA,” she said. “I’ve also become more confident in representing the values of our organization and advocating for initiatives that matter.”
As MSA president, Muddassir hosted a fundraiser that collected over $700 and a World Hijab Day where students could try on a hijab and learn about its cultural significance.
“I’m incredibly grateful to Bergen for providing a platform to grow and make meaningful contributions,” said Muddassir.
Muddassir expects to graduate in 2024.
